Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February. Thailand's Chinese group market goes into it weaker after the Chinese Embassy's advisory of 16 October 2026: ATTA says group bookings are more than 30% below last year. Explera DMC advises agents to brief clients plainly, travel with licensed operators and hold February rooms now.
Every year the week around Chinese New Year is one of Thailand's busiest for groups from China. This year it starts from a weaker place, and agencies selling Chinese New Year 2027 Thailand group tours should know why before they quote. Our Thailand desk has written the full Chinese New Year 2027 briefing. This is the short version, from the group desk.
What Changed in October?
- 16 October 2026: the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok issued a safety advisory about Chinese nationals lured by job, business or investment offers, some of them taken towards the Myanmar border. It told travellers to use legal, licensed transport and to refuse any trip to border areas.
- Thai ministers replied within days. Tourism Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said the cases mostly involved people deceived at home, not genuine tourists. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow asked the embassy to keep its warnings proportionate, and on 27 October said he would talk to the ambassador.
- ATTA counted the damage. Its president, Thanapol Cheewarattanaporn, says cancellations have left Chinese group bookings more than 30% below last year. ATTA fears group tours over Lunar New Year 2027 could fall by as much as half. That second number is a forecast, not a count.
How Should Agents Handle Chinese New Year 2027 Thailand Group Tours?
- Put the advisory in the joining instructions. The cases begin with an offer of work or investment, not with a holiday. Tell clients to travel with a licensed operator, use booked transport with a named driver, and say no to any job, deal or free ride to the border.
- Book through a registered agency and a ground handler. A group handled that way already travels the way the embassy recommends.
- Hold February rooms now and review them in December. Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai are usually full that week. A weak group market may free some space, but independent travellers and other markets can take it, and the government talks could change the picture before February.
- Do not plan on a late bargain. We would rather release rooms in December than look for them in January.

How far have Chinese group bookings to Thailand fallen?
ATTA says cancellations have left group bookings more than 30% below last year. It fears a fall of up to 50% in group tours over Lunar New Year 2027, which is a forecast.

Yes, with clear briefing. Groups that travel with a licensed operator, booked transport and a ground handler follow what the advisory asks. Hold the rooms your clients need now and review them in December.
