Check, Clean, Dry: New Zealand Water Days for Groups

13 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

New Zealand asks everyone moving between rivers and lakes to check, clean and dry their gear so freshwater pests such as didymo do not spread. For groups it matters on kayak, rafting and fishing days. Explera DMC prefers operator-supplied gear, briefs clients before arrival and builds cleaning and drying time into the programme.

Most multi-destination programmes reach New Zealand for its scenery, and many include a day on the water: a lake kayak, a river raft or a morning with a fishing guide. Our New Zealand team sets out the rules in its Check, Clean, Dry guide for groups. This note is for agents fitting that day into a wider quote.

Why Is Check, Clean, Dry in the News?

On 6 October 2026, the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Southland Fish & Game confirmed didymo, an invasive freshwater alga, in the Kaipo River in northwest Fiordland. They said the vast majority of Fiordland's rivers and tributaries remain free of it, and asked every waterway user, including packrafters, trampers, hunters and anglers, to do their part.

What Do Clients Have to Do?

  • Check. Before leaving a river or lake, remove weed and mud, leave it at the site, and drain all water from gear.
  • Clean. Follow the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) cleaning methods, which now differ between the North and South Islands. Absorbent items such as felt, wetsuits and lifejackets need an approved treatment.
  • Dry. Once gear is dry to the touch, inside and out, leave it for at least 48 hours before it goes into another waterway.

Which Clients Need the Most Planning?

Anglers heading to Fiordland. DOC requires a sports fishing licence, a Clean Gear Certificate from an approved cleaning station issued within 48 hours before fishing, and a didymo cleaning kit, and felt-soled waders are not permitted. Watercraft are prohibited on the Clinton and Arthur rivers, and kayakers and packrafters need a permit for the Arthur River between Sandfly Point and Lake Ada.

How Does It Shape the Programme?

  • Operator gear is the default. Kayaks, rafts and rods supplied by a local operator are that operator's responsibility, which removes most of the work for a group.
  • Own gear goes on the arrival declaration. Clients bringing used fishing or water-sports gear must declare it at the New Zealand border.
  • Back-to-back water days need a plan. If a client's own gear moves between waterways, allow time for cleaning and drying, or switch to operator gear for the second day.
