Hamilton Gardens for Groups: A Waikato Stop for Agents

14 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

The short answer

Hamilton Gardens opened its Medieval Garden on 24 September 2026, the newest of its themed Enclosed Gardens. Visitors from outside Hamilton pay to enter the Enclosed Gardens, and the rest of the site is free. Explera DMC's New Zealand team uses the gardens as a timed stop in a Waikato day, beside Hobbiton or Waitomo.

Most North Island group programmes cross the Waikato at least once, usually on the coach day between Auckland and Rotorua. Our New Zealand team covers the new garden in its Hamilton Gardens notes for groups. This page is the short version for agents deciding whether the stop belongs in a group itinerary.

What Is New at Hamilton Gardens?

The Medieval Garden opened to the public on 24 September 2026. Hamilton Gardens describes it this way:

  • The model: its courts are based on the ruins of the St John of the Hermits Monastery in Sicily.
  • A cloister garth: a simple lawn of the kind monks used for prayer and contemplation.
  • An apothecary garden: beds of medicinal plants, with more than 40 medicinal species.

Who Pays to Enter the Enclosed Gardens?

  • Overseas groups pay. Since 18 September 2024, visitors from outside Hamilton pay to enter the Enclosed Gardens. We confirm the entry cost at quotation.
  • Under-16s enter free, so a family or school group needs its ages on the rooming list.
  • The rest of the site is free to everyone, including the rose gardens, Turtle Lake, the café and parking.

How Does the Stop Fit a Group Day?

  • On the way, not instead. The gardens sit in the same region as Hobbiton and Waitomo, so they can join a day groups already take. Our notes on Hobbiton and Waitomo for tour groups cover the rest of that day.
  • As a timed stop. We set the arrival time and any guided tour slot when we quote, so the coach day keeps its shape.
  • With a short briefing. The Enclosed Gardens are themed gardens from different times and places, not a botanic collection. Clients enjoy them more when they know that before they arrive.
