Nelson's Rare Parakeet Sanctuary: A Note for Agents

15 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

A survey at Brook Waimārama Sanctuary in Nelson counted close to 300 kākāriki karaka, New Zealand's rarest parakeet, giving the sanctuary the world's largest population of the species. For agents it is a half-day nature stop close to Nelson town. Explera DMC's New Zealand team adds it to Nelson Tasman programmes for nature-minded groups.

Nelson is usually sold for its coast, its food and its wine. A conservation result reported in September gives agents one more reason to keep a group there an extra half day. Our New Zealand team covers the survey in its Brook Waimārama Sanctuary notes. This page is the short version for agents who sell Nelson alongside our other destinations.

What Did the Survey Find?

On 17 September 2026 New Zealand's Department of Conservation (DOC) reported the annual survey of kākāriki karaka, also called the orange-fronted parakeet, at Brook Waimārama Sanctuary:

  • Close to 300 birds. More than 285 birds were counted on one day and 229 the next.
  • Almost 100 more than last year. DOC said the count was almost 100 birds higher than the previous year's.
  • The largest population anywhere. The sanctuary now holds the world's largest population of the species. DOC says around 450 remain in total, mostly in predator-free sanctuaries or on islands.
  • A recent arrival. The birds were first introduced to the sanctuary in 2021.

Why Does It Matter for a Group Programme?

  • It is close to town. The sanctuary is in the Brook Valley behind Nelson, so a visit fits a morning or an afternoon without a long transfer.
  • It is a walking visit. Groups move on foot through native forest, so we check walking ability and which tracks are open on the day.
  • No sighting is promised. These are small birds in forest. Clients should value the place itself, not expect a guaranteed sighting.
  • It adds depth to Nelson Tasman. A conservation stop sits well beside Abel Tasman National Park and the region's food and wine.

How Should Agents Use It?

  • Sell it to the right clients. Nature-minded groups, special-interest tours and incentive groups with a sustainability theme get the most from it.
  • Give Nelson two or three nights. A sanctuary visit, a coast day and a food and wine afternoon need time; one night in transit does not allow it.
  • Brief clients honestly. The story is a species recovering, not a wildlife show. We say that in pre-departure notes.
  • Plan each destination on its own rules. Access, seasons and wildlife rules differ in every country we cover, so we quote each one on its own terms.
