The SL Yamaguchi and Tsuwano: A Steam-Train Day for Japan Groups

16 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

The SL Yamaguchi is a steam train between Shin-Yamaguchi and Tsuwano, running on weekends and holidays from 3 October to 20 December 2026. Explera DMC adds it to western Japan programmes as a one-day rail experience, requests group seats the day sales open and pairs the ride with a half day in Tsuwano.

Most western Japan programmes run Hiroshima, Miyajima and Kyoto and stop there. The SL Yamaguchi gives agencies a reason to go one step further: a steam train on a rural line, ending in Tsuwano, a small castle town in Shimane. It suits rail enthusiasts, repeat Japan clients and groups who want a slower day between cities. Our Japan team sets out the train and the town in its Tsuwano and SL Yamaguchi note. This page is for agencies deciding whether the day belongs in an autumn programme.

Why Is Autumn 2026 a Good Time to Sell It?

  • The steam season. The train runs on weekends and holidays from 3 October to 20 December 2026, with one round trip a day.
  • The C57 is back. Yamaguchi Prefecture's tourism site says the C57 steam locomotive returns to the train this autumn.
  • A regional campaign. Yamaguchi Prefecture and the JR group run the Yamaguchi Destination Campaign from 1 October to 31 December 2026, with events across the prefecture.

How Does the Day Fit a Western Japan Programme?

  • The start. The train leaves from Shin-Yamaguchi, a stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen, so it links easily to a Hiroshima stay.
  • The ride. The JR Yamaguchi Line runs about 62.9 kilometres to Tsuwano, roughly two hours each way.
  • The finish. From Tsuwano, groups can continue to Hagi or to Matsue and Izumo on the San'in coast instead of returning the same way.

How Should Agencies Book a Group?

  • Seats on the first day. Tickets go on sale one month before the travel date, at 10:00 Japan time, and group space is limited, so we request it the day sales open.
  • The right car. The train has five cars. Car 1 is the Green Car, with an observation room and deck for Green Car ticket holders; cars 2 to 4 have box seats where a group can sit together.
  • A fallback. Running days are set by JR West and can change, so we confirm each date and hold a coach or ordinary train option in case steam seats cannot be secured.

What Do Groups Do in Tsuwano?

Tsuwano works as a half-day stop. Groups walk the old samurai street with its white walls and channels of koi, then climb to Taikodani Inari Shrine through a tunnel of red torii gates above the town.
