Stats NZ counted 248,700 overseas visitor arrivals in New Zealand in August 2026, 99 per cent of the August 2019 level. Australia sent about half, and China added the most visitors of any market. 248,700 overseas visitor arrivals in August 2026, up 18,400 on August 2025.
99 per cent of August 2019, when there were 251,100 arrivals.
3.71 million overseas visitors in the year to August 2026, up 307,000 on the year before.

Which Markets Grew Fastest?

China, up about 6,500 visitors on August 2025 and about 11 per cent of arrivals.
Australia, with 125,600 arrivals, a record for an August month and about half of the total.
Taiwan and Singapore, both with August records (5,800 and 4,600).
The United States, up about 2,000.

What Does It Mean for Group Programmes?

Hold rooms early. With arrivals near 2019 levels, peak-month group rooms in Auckland, Rotorua and Queenstown go first.
Book guide languages at quotation. Growth from China, Taiwan and Singapore lifts demand for Mandarin-speaking guides in the same weeks.
Watch Australian school holidays. About half of all visitors come from Australia, so its holidays shape what is free.
