Meiji Park at Hakata Station: Notes for Fukuoka Groups

22 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

The short answer

Meiji Park, officially The Gateway Park HAKATA MEIJI, opened on 7 August 2026 about four minutes on foot from the Hakata exit of JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka. It has a raised garden walkway, five gardens, seven tenants and an urban spa, and no parking. Explera DMC uses it as a first or last stop for Kyushu groups.

Fukuoka is often the first or last city on a Kyushu programme, and the area outside Hakata Station now has a park built for that moment. Our Japan team covers it in its Meiji Park note; this page is the short version for agencies selling Japan alongside our other destinations.

What Is Meiji Park?

  • A rebuilt city park beside JR Hakata Station, opened on 7 August 2026.
  • Run by private firms: a group led by Tokyo Tatemono rebuilt it under Park-PFI, a system that lets companies build and run facilities in public parks.
  • Designed under architect Sou Fujimoto, with a raised walkway that winds through the gardens, up to about 10 metres high.
  • Seven tenants, mostly local restaurants, and the TOTOPA urban spa, its first site in Kyushu.

How Does It Fit a Group Programme?

  • First or last stop. Groups can stretch their legs and eat before a Shinkansen or a flight, or right after arriving.
  • Lunch. Our team checks which restaurants can seat a group and books ahead.
  • On foot. The park has no parking, so coaches drop groups near the station and they walk over.
  • A spa break for small groups who enjoy saunas.
