The RealNZ conservation partnership is a three-year deal with New Zealand's Department of Conservation, announced on 23 October 2026. RealNZ runs Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound cruises and the TSS Earnslaw. Bookings do not change, but clients now have a documented answer to how their excursions back conservation. Explera DMC builds these excursions into group programmes.
If you sell Fiordland, you will have sold a RealNZ product, whether or not the name meant anything to the client. The company runs a large share of the big southern excursions. On 23 October 2026 it signed a three-year conservation partnership with the Department of Conservation (DOC). Our New Zealand team has the detail in its DOC and RealNZ briefing; this note is for agencies that sell New Zealand next to other destinations.
What Is the RealNZ Conservation Partnership?
- The deal. DOC calls it a National Programme Partnership. It runs for three years and covers shared conservation work.
- The money. This year RealNZ raised more than NZ$300,000 through its Night for Nature event and a 1% for Conservation donation on online bookings.
- Where it went. The funds went to the planned return of kiwi pukupuku, the little spotted kiwi, from Kāpiti Island to Cooper Island in Fiordland. RealNZ says the move is due in 2028.
- What it is not. DOC says the partnership has no bearing on its decisions about concessions on conservation land.

Which Group Excursions Does It Touch?
Most of the ones we put on southern itineraries:
- Fiordland. Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound cruises and the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves. Our Doubtful Sound guide and Te Anau guide cover the logistics.
- Queenstown. The TSS Earnslaw steamer, Walter Peak Farm and Queenstown Rafting.
- Winter. Cardrona and Treble Cone ski areas.
How Should Agents Use It?
Keep it simple. A client asks whether the cruise is "eco". You can say the operator funds predator control on Cooper Island and has raised money for a kiwi return, and that DOC has put its name to a partnership. That is a real answer, and it beats a vague green label.
Two things not to say. Do not tell a client that their own booking pays for kiwi. And do not suggest the partnership changes prices or departures; it does not. We confirm both when we quote.
