Tongariro Northern Circuit groups walk it one way in the 2026/27 season, from Mangatepopo Carpark to Whakapapa Village, because one section is still closed after the 2025 fire. The rebuilt Oturere Hut takes bookings from 18 December 2026. Explera DMC books the huts, the shuttle to the start and a guide for walking groups.
The Tongariro Northern Circuit is the walk we suggest when a group has done the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in their heads already and wants more of the volcanic plateau. It is three or four days in Tongariro National Park, with huts each night. This season it runs differently. Our New Zealand team covers it in full in its Tongariro Northern Circuit briefing; this is the short version for agencies selling several destinations.
How Do Tongariro Northern Circuit Groups Walk It This Season?
- One way. DOC runs the track from Mangatepopo Carpark to Whakapapa Village for 2026/27. It is not a loop this summer.
- Why. The section between Whakapapa Village and Mangatepopo is closed after the 2025 Tongariro fire and stays closed for the season.
- The new hut. DOC said on 4 September 2026 that bad weather slowed the building work. The new Oturere Hut and campsite open for bookings from 18 December 2026.
One-way walks need a vehicle at both ends, so we plan the transfers before anything else. Parking at Mangatepopo is limited to four hours in the season, which rules out leaving a coach there.

Who Should Book It?
Fit walkers only. DOC calls the terrain difficult, exposed and uneven, and does not recommend it for children under 10. The weather turns fast up there and the track crosses active volcanic vents. From May to October it needs alpine skills, so we only sell it from late October to April.
For groups that want the scenery without the nights in huts, our geothermal tours guide covers the Tongariro Alpine Crossing as a day, and our Tongariro River Trail note has an easy walk near Tūrangi.
What Do We Book First?
- Huts. Bookings are needed all year and are open now. Hut space goes before anything else on a Great Walk, so it leads the booking order. Our Great Walks guide explains the system.
- Fees. International visitors pay separate DOC rates in the season. We confirm them at booking.
- Shuttle. A transfer to Mangatepopo at the start and a pick-up at Whakapapa Village at the end.
