Where to see kiwi in New Zealand depends on the route. Kiwi houses and hatcheries from Whangārei to Queenstown show them on any day, while wild kiwi need a small-group night tour at Zealandia, on Kāpiti Island or on Stewart Island, with no guarantee. Explera DMC matches the option to each group's route and ages.
Ask a group what they want to see in New Zealand and someone will say a kiwi. The honest answer is that they almost certainly will, but probably not in the wild, and not in daylight. Our New Zealand team has the full list in its region-by-region guide to seeing kiwi. This is the short version we give agencies that sell New Zealand alongside our other destinations.
Where to See Kiwi in New Zealand Without Leaving the Route
The easy win is a nocturnal kiwi house. There is one in almost every region a group passes through, so the kiwi can come to the itinerary rather than the other way round.
- North Island. Kiwi North in Whangārei, the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House, and two options in Rotorua: the National Kiwi Hatchery Aotearoa, now at the Agrodome site, and the Kiwi Conservation Centre at Te Puia.
- South Island. Willowbank in Christchurch, the West Coast Wildlife Centre in Franz Josef, which raises chicks of the rare rowi, and Kiwi Park Queenstown.
What About Wild Kiwi?
Wild kiwi are a night out, in small numbers, and nobody can promise a sighting. We say that in writing before the client pays.
- Zealandia, Wellington. The night tour runs about 2.5 hours for up to 12 people aged 12 and over.
- Kāpiti Island. Only DOC-approved operators land there, and the overnight option sits on private land on the island.
- Stewart Island / Rakiura. Evening encounters run in small groups.

What Should Agents Check Before Quoting?
- Group size. Night tours take small numbers, so a coach group becomes several departures.
- Ages. Several night tours set a minimum age. Check the passenger list first.
- Cameras. Te Puia does not allow cameras in its kiwi enclosure, and rules vary elsewhere.
- The rest of the trip. Our New Zealand conservation tours guide, our New Zealand wildlife seasons planner and our Franz Josef and Fox glacier note fit around a kiwi stop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a group see a kiwi on any day?
Yes, in a nocturnal kiwi house or hatchery. Kiwi North, the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House, the Rotorua hatchery and Kiwi Park Queenstown all show kiwi in daytime opening hours.
Is a wild kiwi sighting guaranteed?
No. Zealandia, Kāpiti Island and Stewart Island give groups a chance at night, but no operator can promise a sighting.
How big can a kiwi night tour be?
Small. Zealandia's night tour takes up to 12 people, so larger groups split into several departures.
Can clients photograph kiwi?
It depends on the operator. Te Puia does not allow cameras in its kiwi enclosure, so we confirm the rules for each stop.
