Kepler Track Group Tours: A Fiordland Loop

25 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

The short answer

Kepler Track group tours walk a Great Walk loop in Fiordland National Park that starts 5 km from Te Anau. Most groups take four days and three nights, staying at Luxmore, Iris Burn and Moturau huts. The 2026/27 season runs from 27 October 2026 to 30 April 2027, and Explera DMC plans the huts, transfers and guides.

Most Great Walks leave you with a transfer problem at the far end. The Kepler does not. It starts and finishes near Te Anau, so the group walks out a short drive from the hotel it walked in from, and that makes it the easiest of the Fiordland walks to fit around a coach programme. Our New Zealand team has written the full Kepler Track briefing. This note covers Kepler Track group tours for agencies that sell New Zealand next to other destinations.

What Do Kepler Track Group Tours Involve?

  • A loop. DOC's section distances add up to about 60 km, from the Kepler Track car park through Brod Bay, Luxmore Hut, Iris Burn Hut and Moturau Hut, then back.
  • Four days. Most walkers take four days and three nights.
  • Bookings. Every hut and campsite has to be booked in the Great Walk season, which runs from 27 October 2026 to 30 April 2027.

What Can Change the Plan?

The alpine section. Between Luxmore Hut and Iris Burn Hut the track crosses open tops, and DOC says avalanche risk can extend into December and close that stretch. For an early-season group, we hold a spare day rather than hope. Two smaller points:

  • Race day. The Kepler Challenge runs on the first Saturday in December, and the track is busy that day.
  • Age. DOC does not recommend the track for children under 10.

A group that does not want four days can walk up to Luxmore Hut for one night, or take a day walk from either end.

What Should Agents Plan First?

The huts. Popular nights go early, so settle the dates before anything else, then build the Te Anau hotel nights around them. Our Te Anau group stay guide and New Zealand Great Walks guide cover both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Kepler Track start?

At the Kepler Track car park, 5 km from Te Anau. It is a loop, so groups finish close to where they started.

When is the Kepler Track Great Walk season?

From 27 October 2026 to 30 April 2027. Outside it, the track needs alpine skills and equipment.

How long does the Kepler Track take?

Most walkers take four days and three nights.

Is there a shorter option for groups?

Yes. Groups can walk to Luxmore Hut for one night, or do a day walk from the car park or from Rainbow Reach.
