The Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk is a one-way walk in Te Urewera, in the North Island, between Onepoto and Hopuruahine. DOC suggests three nights and four days, and every hut and campsite must be booked all year, for everyone in the group. Explera DMC plans the huts, the water taxi and road transfers, and the guides.
When a client asks for a Great Walk in the North Island, most agents reach for Tongariro. Lake Waikaremoana is the one to offer when the group wants something quieter, and it sits well with a Rotorua or Hawke's Bay programme. Our New Zealand team has written the full Lake Waikaremoana briefing. This note covers the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk for groups, for agencies that sell New Zealand next to other destinations.
What Does the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk Involve?
- One way. The walk follows the lake shore from Onepoto in the south to Hopuruahine in the north, and can start at either end.
- Four days. DOC suggests three nights and four days.
- Huts. The open huts are Panekire, Waiopaoa, Marauiti and Waiharuru. Whanganui Hut is closed.
- Bookings. Huts and campsites must be booked all year, including for children who pay no fee.

Why Brief the Group on Te Urewera?
Because it is not an ordinary national park. Te Urewera is recognised in New Zealand law as a legal entity, and Te Uru Taumatua, the operational arm of Ngāi Tūhoe, looks after the tracks and huts. Tūhoe wardens are at the main huts in the peak season. Clients who know that before they arrive tend to get more out of the walk, and we include it in the pre-departure notes.
What Should Agents Plan First?
The water taxi. Tūhoe runs one to both ends of the walk and to some huts, usually from October to April and not in winter, and DOC advises booking it early. That is why we sell the walk in that window and fix the transfers before the huts. For a busier alternative, see our Tongariro Northern Circuit note.
