Milford Track group tours walk a Great Walk in Fiordland National Park one way over four days and three nights, staying at Clinton, Mintaro and Dumpling huts. The 2026/27 season runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, both ends are reached only by boat, and Explera DMC books the huts, boats and transfers.
The Milford Track is the opposite of the Kepler. It runs one way, it starts and ends on the water, and nothing about it can be fixed on the day. A group that walks it needs four things booked before it leaves home: three hut nights, a boat in, a boat out and the road back. Our New Zealand team has written the full Milford Track briefing. This note covers Milford Track group tours for agencies that sell New Zealand next to other destinations.
What Do Milford Track Group Tours Involve?
- One direction. From Glade Wharf at the head of Lake Te Anau to Sandfly Point in Milford Sound, about 53.5 km.
- Four days, three huts. Clinton, Mintaro and Dumpling, one night each. Camping is not allowed.
- The pass. The highest point is Omanui/Mackinnon Pass Shelter, at 1,154 m, and Sutherland Falls is a side trip of about 1.5 hours return.
- The season. DOC's 2026/27 Great Walk season runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, with the last departure on 28 April 2027.
What Has to Be Booked?
Everything, and in the right order. Hut nights come first, through DOC, because walkers without a booking can be turned away. Then the boats: about 1 hour 15 minutes from Te Anau Downs to Glade Wharf, and about 20 minutes from Sandfly Point to Milford Sound. There is no road to either end. We add the road transfer from Te Anau, the return from Milford Sound and the luggage move to the next hotel.
Who Should Walk It?
Fit walkers who can carry their own food and cooking gear, because huts have no utensils or showers. DOC does not recommend the track for children under 10. Fiordland can get up to 9,000 mm of rain a year, heavy rain can close the valleys, and avalanche risk can run into December, so we hold a spare day for early-season groups. Our Kepler Track group tours note covers the easier loop next door.
