Korea E-Gates for Foreign Visitors: What It Means for Groups

27 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

Since March 2026, Korea's e-gates for foreign visitors, the Smart Entry Service, accept passports from 42 countries and regions instead of 18, including the remaining EU states and Canada. Adults generally need fingerprints and a photo from an earlier entry, so first-timers still use staffed desks. Explera DMC plans each group arrival around that split.

Korea's e-gates for foreign visitors used to be a footnote in our arrival briefings. Since March 2026 they are a planning point. The Ministry of Justice opened the Smart Entry Service to 42 countries and regions, up from 18, and on a mixed group that means some clients walk through in a minute while others queue. Our Korea desk has the full arrival briefing. Here is how we handle it across the group.

Who Can Use Korea's E-Gates for Foreign Visitors?

  • The passport decides first. It has to be on the ministry's list. The March 2026 additions include the EU member states that were not yet eligible, the non-EU Schengen countries and Canada.
  • Then a previous visit. Travellers aged 17 and over can use the gates once their fingerprints and photo were registered on an earlier entry. A first-time adult goes to a staffed desk, whatever the passport.
  • Children follow other rules. Under-17s need pre-registration or a legal representative, depending on age.
  • It is not an entry permit. K-ETA and visa requirements still apply to the nationalities that need them.

Why Does It Change a Group Arrival?

A coach full of first-timers clears immigration together. A group with a few repeat visitors from Europe or Canada does not: they come through the gates well ahead of everyone else and then wait. On a busy arrival bank at Incheon that gap can stretch, and a group that has split at passport control is hard to gather in a crowded hall.

So we treat it like any other rooming-list detail. When passports arrive, we mark each traveller as gate or desk, and the tour leader gets that list before departure. Our note on Incheon by KTX to Songdo covers what happens once the group is through.

How Do We Plan Around It?

  • One meeting point after baggage claim. The guide waits there for the whole group, not at the immigration exit.
  • Coach timing follows the slower lane. We time the pick-up to the staffed desks, not to the fastest traveller.
  • No surprises at the gate. First-timers are told not to try the gates, so nobody is turned back and sent to the end of a desk queue.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many nationalities can use Korea's e-gates?

Since March 2026, travellers from 42 countries and regions are eligible, up from 18. The additions include the remaining EU member states and Canada.

Can a first-time visitor to Korea use the e-gates?

Usually not. Visitors aged 17 and over qualify once their fingerprints and photo were registered on an earlier entry, so first-time adults use a staffed desk.

Do children in a group qualify for the Smart Entry Service?

Travellers under 17 need pre-registration or a legal representative, depending on age. Families should plan on a staffed desk unless this is arranged.

Does the Smart Entry Service replace K-ETA?

No. It is a faster way through passport control, not permission to enter. K-ETA and visa rules still apply to the nationalities that need them.
