Связь для групп в Азии: требование, которое никто не считает

20 September 2026 · Explera DMC · 4 min read

Connectivity is treated as a client's own problem almost everywhere and is in fact an operational requirement, because in all four of Explera's destinations the things a traveller needs most now live on the phone: the mapping that works locally, the ride-hailing app that gets them back to the hotel, translation, entry-paperwork QR codes and increasingly ticketing. A client without data is not mildly inconvenienced — they cannot summon a taxi or read a menu. For a group, the two without data are the two who get separated.

Единственный по-настоящему необычный случай

Корея restricts the export of detailed mapping data, so the global mapping application most travellers arrive using gives only limited walking and transit directions there. Clients discover this on day one, generally standing in a subway station, and it is the single most common source of first-day confusion on a Korean itinerary.

The fix costs nothing: name the domestic mapping apps in the joining instructions, before the client lands rather than at the welcome briefing. They are excellent, free and available in English. Our Korea connectivity guide covers it in full. No equivalent restriction applies in Japan, Thailand or Indonesia, where the familiar global apps work normally.

Три варианта для разных групп

  • eSIM — bought and installed before travel, live on landing, nothing to collect, lose or return. Best for FIT clients and anyone with a recent handset. It requires an unlocked, eSIM-capable phone, and the most common failure across every market is a client arriving with a phone that cannot take one after being sold one. A single line asking clients to confirm compatibility prevents it.
  • Local SIM — collected on arrival, works in older handsets, and the collection counter is a queue that belongs in the transfer timing rather than being discovered at it.
  • Pocket wi-fi — one rented device for several people, so the economical choice for a family or small party. The trade-off is that the group must stay together and the device must be charged and returned.

Roaming works everywhere and is the expensive default clients fall back on when nobody advised them otherwise. Hotel wi-fi is genuinely good across all four markets and is not a substitute, because the moment connectivity matters most is the moment the client is away from it.

Что меняется от рынка к рынку

Япония and Korea have the most reliable coverage and the highest dependence on it. Таиланд has strong urban coverage and cheap, easily obtained local SIMs. Индонезия is the one to plan around: coverage is good in Bali, Java and the main cities and genuinely patchy in the remoter islands, on liveaboards and in the national parks — which means a group itinerary there needs a stated expectation of when clients will be offline, and a guide with a satellite option where the programme goes far enough.

For a multi-country trip, the practical point is that an eSIM bought for one country will not usually cover the next. Either a regional plan is chosen deliberately at booking, or clients need a plan per country and should be told so before they buy the first one.

An eSIM bought for one country usually will not cover the next. Decide the regional plan at booking, not at the third airport.

Приложения, которые стоит назвать

Per country in the joining instructions: the local mapping app where it beats the global one, the local ride-hailing app — which works far better than hailing on the street and removes the language problem from the journey — and a translation app with camera input, which is consistently what clients report back as most useful.

Plus two things saved offline: the entry-paperwork QR codes, because the airport is exactly where the client will not yet have data, and a contact card with the guide's name, coach number and hotel address in the local script. Screenshotted, not emailed.

Explera specifies the connectivity approach per group rather than leaving clients to work it out, supplies joining-instruction wording naming the local apps, builds collection queues into arrival timings, and has guides set up phones at the first stop for groups that need it. Wider capability in our services overview.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Will one eSIM cover a multi-country Asia trip? Usually not. A plan bought for one country rarely covers the next, so either a regional plan is chosen deliberately at booking or clients need one per country — and should be told before they buy the first.

Why do clients get lost in Korea specifically? Korea restricts the export of detailed mapping data, so the global mapping app most travellers use gives only limited walking and transit directions. The domestic apps are excellent and should be named before departure.

Which option suits a group best? Pick one standard for the whole party. Mixed connectivity within a group is what causes separations. eSIM suits modern handsets, local SIM suits older ones, pocket wi-fi suits families travelling together.

Where is coverage actually unreliable? Indonesia's remoter islands, liveaboards and national parks. Japan, Korea and urban Thailand are reliable. An Indonesian itinerary should state when clients will be offline.

What is the most common failure? A client arriving with a phone that cannot take the eSIM they were sold. One line in the joining instructions asking them to confirm compatibility prevents it.
