Tokyo Tap-to-Ride: Bank Cards on 11 Railways for Agents

23 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

The short answer

Since 25 March 2026, 11 railway companies around Tokyo, including Tokyo Metro, Toei and Tokyu, accept contactless bank cards at marked ticket gates as one system across 54 lines and 729 stations. JR East is not part of it. Explera DMC briefs clients on where it works and where an IC card is still needed.

Agencies selling Tokyo can now tell clients that many city lines take the same contactless card they use at home. Our Japan team covers the detail in its tap-to-ride note; this page is the short version for agencies selling Japan alongside our other destinations.

What Changed on 25 March 2026?

  • One shared system. 11 railway companies in the Kanto region began mutual use of contactless bank-card payment on the same day.
  • Wide coverage. The service runs across 54 lines and 729 stations, so a client can change between these companies without paying again at the gate.
  • Marked gates only. Only gates with the touch-payment mark accept bank cards.

Which Lines Are Not Included?

  • JR East. The Yamanote Line and most JR trains around Tokyo do not take bank cards at the gate.
  • Some other operators. Coverage is not the same on every network, so we check each route before we brief clients.

How Do We Use It for Clients?

  • Free time. Tap-to-ride suits clients who move around on their own between group activities.
  • Group transfers. A group moving together still travels on IC cards, group tickets or a private coach that we arrange.
  • Passes. Day passes and rail passes can still cost less than paying per ride, so we compare them for each itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which companies take part?

There are 11, including Tokyo Metro, Toei, Tokyu, Keio, Odakyu, Tobu, Seibu, Keikyu and Sotetsu.

Can clients tap a bank card on JR East trains?

No. JR East is not part of the service, so clients need an IC card, a paper ticket or a rail pass on JR lines.

Does every gate accept bank cards?

No. Only gates with the touch-payment mark do, so travellers should look for the sign.

Do groups still need IC cards or group tickets?

Yes, for a group moving together. Tap-to-ride works best for clients travelling on their own in free time.
