Hāhei Beach Short Walk Reroute: What It Means for Groups

26 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

The Department of Conservation is rerouting the Hāhei Beach Short Walk around landslide damage in the Mautohe Cathedral Cove Reserve. The walk is closed, contractors start on 14 November 2026, and DOC has not confirmed a reopening date. Explera DMC plans Coromandel days for groups that work whether or not this walk is open.

Clients who have seen one photo of Cathedral Cove want to walk to it, and for years the prettiest way in was the short walk up from Hāhei Beach. That walk has been shut since a landslide, and DOC has now settled on how to bring it back. Our New Zealand team has the full Hāhei briefing. Here is what the Hāhei Beach Short Walk reroute changes for agents selling a Coromandel day this summer.

What Is the Hāhei Beach Short Walk Reroute?

DOC said on 14 October 2026 that a landslide in early 2026 damaged the track. Instead of repairing individual sections, it will build a new line around the slip, which it called the more practical and resilient long-term option. It put the reroute at about $121,000, against $303,000 estimated in 2024 to stabilise the top section around two bridges. The Hāhei Residents and Ratepayers Association would take on routine maintenance and trapping, and DOC would stay responsible for visitor safety and major repairs.

When Could It Reopen?

Contractors start on 14 November 2026, and from then the track is a work site. Local reporting on 23 October said the walk could reopen before Christmas, but DOC has not confirmed a date. We do not sell a walk on a "could". Until DOC says the walk is open, our programmes treat it as closed.

How Do We Plan a Cathedral Cove Day Now?

The main track to the cove is a separate track and is open, but DOC closes it after heavy rain, so we check it before every departure. Groups use the Hāhei Visitor Car Park rather than Grange Road. And every Coromandel day we build carries a second plan: a boat or kayak trip where operators are running, an afternoon on Hāhei Beach, or a drive across the peninsula. A client who misses the cove on a wet day should still have a good day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Hāhei Beach Short Walk open?

No. It is closed, and contractors start work on 14 November 2026. DOC has not confirmed a reopening date.

Why is DOC rerouting it?

A landslide in early 2026 damaged the track, and DOC judged a reroute more practical and resilient than repairing it.

Is Cathedral Cove itself closed?

No. The main track to the cove is separate and open, but DOC closes it after heavy rain.

What should agents promise clients?

A Cathedral Cove day with a backup, not a specific walk. We confirm track status before each departure.
