Korea's digital barriers for tourists are mostly sign-ups that want a Korean phone number and overseas cards that get declined. A Yanolja Research study of English-language Reddit posts found complaints in about 11% of Korea posts against about 7% for Japan. Explera DMC books what needs local verification before arrival and briefs every group on payments and data.
Korea's digital barriers for tourists are not news to anyone who has stood beside a client at a ticket kiosk. What is new is a number to put on them. Our Korea team has written the full briefing note on app and card problems. This is the version for your desk.
What Did the Study Find About Korea's Digital Barriers for Tourists?
- The source. Yanolja Research read English-language Reddit posts about travel in Korea and Japan from January 2023 to December 2025. It first published the analysis in April 2026, and lawmaker Kim Yoon-deok raised it at the National Assembly audit in October.
- The gap. About 11% of the Korea posts carried a complaint, against about 7% for Japan.
- The top category. For Korea it was digital services: sign-ups that need a Korean mobile number, identity checks, overseas cards declined, and some apps limited from foreign IP addresses.
It measures what travellers chose to post, not every visitor. Still, it matches what our guides hear on the road, almost word for word.
Why Does This Land on the Agent?
Because the client does not blame the app. They blame the trip. A dinner they could not book or a train ticket that would not go through turns into a complaint about the programme, and that comes back to your desk. Free time is where it hurts most, since the guide is not there to step in.
How Do We Brief a Korea Group?
We reserve anything that needs local verification before the group lands: restaurants, shows and timed tickets in the programme. Group services are paid on site by our team. Each confirmation goes out with a short note asking clients to carry a second card on a different network, a little won in cash for stalls, and an eSIM or roaming plan that works from the airport. Our payments on the ground note covers settlement on our side, and the Onnuri QR market note shows where things are getting easier.

Sign-ups that need a Korean phone number, identity checks, overseas cards being declined, and some apps limited from foreign IP addresses.
How does Explera DMC reduce these problems for groups?
We reserve items that need local verification before arrival, pay group services on site, and send each group a pre-departure note on payments, data and apps.
