Bridge to Nowhere cycling is back on the calendar. The Department of Conservation reopened the Mangapurua Track on 24 October 2026 with seven new bridges, flown in already built. It is a remote Grade 3 ride through Whanganui National Park, with no phone signal and a jet boat out. Explera DMC plans it for confident riders only.
The Bridge to Nowhere is one of those New Zealand names clients have heard of without knowing where it is. It is a concrete bridge deep in Whanganui National Park, and the classic way in is by bike on the Mangapurua Track. That track has just reopened with new bridges. Our New Zealand team covers the detail in its Mangapurua Track briefing; this is the version for agencies selling several destinations.
What Has Changed for Bridge to Nowhere Cycling?
- New bridges. DOC installed seven new bridges, built offsite and flown in. The old ones were narrow and awkward with a bike.
- Reopened. The track reopened to cyclists on Saturday 24 October 2026, after its winter closure.
- More to come. DOC and the Ngā Ara Tūhono trust plan 15 new bridges and boardwalks across the Mangapurua and Kaiwhakauka tracks. The Kaiwhakauka works run in November and December 2026, with bypasses.
Who Should Ride It?
This is not a ride for a mixed coach group. DOC grades it Grade 3, with exposed sections, steep drop-offs and slippery clay in the wet. We only put riders on it who already ride off-road.
- Beginners. An easier rail trail suits them better. Our Otago Central Rail Trail guide covers the gentlest option, and our Tongariro River Trail note another North Island ride.
- Non-riders. They can reach the bridge by jet boat and a short walk from the river.

What Do We Plan Around?
- The river. The track ends at Mangapurua Landing on the Whanganui River, so jet boat transfers are booked with the ride.
- No signal. There is no phone coverage. DOC recommends an emergency locator beacon.
- Weather. Wet clay is slow and slippery, so we keep a spare day where we can. Our weather plan B note explains how.
- Trail status. We check it before confirming dates while the Kaiwhakauka works run.
