The Goto Islands off Nagasaki hold four parts of the Hidden Christian Sites World Heritage listing, and several of their churches can only be visited with advance notice. Explera DMC arranges those visits before a group travels, plans the sea crossing from Nagasaki with a weather buffer, and briefs clients on church etiquette.
Heritage and faith programmes to Japan usually stop at Nagasaki city. The Goto Islands, a few hours west by sea, are where many of the communities that kept Christianity in secret actually lived, and they suit agencies selling small, interested groups rather than large coaches. Our Japan team covers the access and the visiting rules in its Goto Islands note. This page is for agencies deciding whether to add the islands to a Kyushu programme.
Why Do the Goto Islands Matter to Heritage Groups?
- World Heritage since 2018. "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region" was inscribed by UNESCO in 2018.
- Four of its twelve parts are here. The settlements on Nozaki, Kashiragashima and Hisaka islands, and the Egami settlement on Naru Island.
- Living churches. Many of the churches are still active parish churches, not museums, which shapes how a group visits.

What Has to Be Arranged Before the Group Travels?
- Advance notice. Visits to Kashiragashima, Egami and the former Gorin church are arranged through the Hidden Christian Sites information centre in Nagasaki, and the former Nokubi church on Nozaki through Ojika Island Tourism.
- Possible refusals. A visit can be declined on days of church events or when too many visitors arrive at once, so dates need a fallback.
- Small groups at each church. We split larger parties and stagger arrival times.
How Should Agencies Plan Access and Timing?
- Sea or air. Goto City lists a jetfoil from Nagasaki Port to Fukue Port of about 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, and a car ferry of about 3 hours 10 minutes to 3 hours 55 minutes. There are also short flights to Fukue from Nagasaki and Fukuoka.
- Weather buffer. Sea crossings are cancelled in strong wind, so we keep a buffer day before any international flight.
- Two or three days. That is the length we suggest as an extension from Nagasaki.

What Should Clients Be Told Before They Go?
No photography inside the churches, no entry for sightseeing during Mass or other services, rubbish taken away, and no walking into fields or homes in the villages. A short briefing before the crossing avoids most problems on the day.
